Hamden Puerto Rican restaurant uses family recipes to attract customers

HAMDEN — Two days after discovering La Isla, a new Puerto Rican restaurant in Hamden, Bynard Clarke found himself there for the third day in a row.

He couldn’t help it. The stew chicken was just as good.

“I was blown away,” Clarke said as he stood in the parking lot outside the Dixwell Avenue restaurant on Friday. “This is day number three.”

He ordered the stew every time he was there, he said.

“It’s hard to explain, but the flavor just pops,” Clarke said. “It’s really good.”

The owners of La Isla, married couple Leli and Darcus Henry, opened the restaurant because they wanted to bring homemade Puerto Rican food to Hamden.
